Updated: Jun 3, 2022

Sufferers of joint pain are well aware of the effect it can have on one’s quality of life. When these aches manifest in the form of joint pain in the fingers, it can be a huge pain, and can hinder your quality of life, as well as make it hard to perform daily tasks like writing, cooking, driving, and so on. Here’s why it happens, and how you can help to ease your symptoms!

How Does Joint Pain In The Fingers Feel For People?

While different people have different thresholds for pain, one will generally experience the following when it comes to joint pain in the fingers:

  • Tenderness in the joints and in the middle of the fingers

  • Stiffness in the joints, especially when just waking up

  • Swelling and warmth around the affected joint

  • Unusual bony bumps and lumps around your finger joints

  • Clicking and cracking when you use your fingers

  • Numbness and tingling in the fingers and joints

  • Weakness and inability to grasp and grip with the fingers

What Are The Causes Of Joint Pain In The Fingers?

When you live a busy life filled with activity and daily tasks, it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly where and how your injuries occur. Joint pain in the fingers is commonly experienced among the general population, and can occur for any number of reasons from kitchen-related injuries to small bruises from day-to-day tasks. However, beyond the casual sprain or strain, joint pain can also manifest itself as the result of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis in the finger joints occurs when the layer of cartilage between your bones wear down over time. This is important to note, as cartilage helps to cushion your joints while you move. Naturally, as the cartilage wears down, the cushioning effect it provides decreases, causing inflammation and swelling in the joints and resulting in the symptoms of osteoarthritis detailed above.

Another cause of joint pain in the fingers is rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune disease. This occurs when the immune system begins to attack the body; in the case of rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system attacks the membrane that protects your joints, causing pain and discomfort in the long run.

How Can I Prevent Joint Pain In The Fingers?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for arthritis, which is why it is very important to protect and prolong the health of your joints. In order to keep your joints in healthy working condition for as long as possible, it can be helpful to engage in treatments and exercises, whilst ensuring a healthy, wholesome diet. Here’s what you can do:

  • Engage in hand exercises like making a fist, bending your thumbs and fingers, and squeezing a stress ball.

  • Cut down or completely eliminate smoking.

  • Don’t overdo an activity involving making the same hand gestures over and over.

  • Keep your fingers warm and temperate. Don’t leave the air conditioning on overnight.

  • Engage in chiropractic or physiotherapy treatments.

Remember that early detection is key to prevention and improvement, so be sure to see a professional the moment you feel your fingers tingling!
